Review of “On Stage with Illusions” by Duane Laflin

10 Apr

Reviewed by J C Sum.

Duane Laflin has written a detailed book that gives a comprehensive look at performing a large-scale illusion show on stage. It is a well produced, clearly written book peppered with photos of Duane performing the illusions on stage with his cast.

In a nutshell, this book is filled with sound practical advice and solid information on producing, performing and managing a large-scale illusion show. It is a book I would have read cover to cover a hundred times at the start of my illusion career. From choosing an illusion, producing different types of shows to examining what makes an illusion show work, Duane leaves little information out. He also includes many miscellaneous practical considerations that do not fall into any one category but are invaluable to any working illusionist. These tips will save you time, frustration, money and effort! These include choosing assistants, how to prepare them to work on an illusion show, how to conduct rehearsals and scripting a show.

I could relate to a lot of information and experiences that Duane shared. A lot of the information is gold and only known to working professionals who have “been there, done that” for years. For example, one seemingly simple but often overlooked aspect of producing an illusion show is backstage management and storage. While some venues have a large stage that can fit the grandest of illusions, the backstage space is often limited. All the illusions and show equipment have to fit into a small confined space and the backstage has to be shared with other artistes. This is a common situation for professional small theatres, auditoriums and even international cruise liners. When Ning & I did our 13-month gig at Clarke Quay in 2008/ 2009, the greatest challenge was packing one hour’s worth of show gear in a backstage space that measures about 10′ x 8′. That was the real magic of the show. We had a full-scale platform levitation, smoke chamber, Bo Staff, Crystal Metamorphosis, Blammo, Shadow Box and a variety of smaller props that all had to fit in that tiny space. Duane addresses practical issues like these that are crucial when producing an illusion show.

One of my favourite chapters in the book is his discussion of illusions. This is similar to the concept of Ning and my “Behind the illusions” DVD but Duane explores mainly “stock” and classic illusions. The way this section is written is similar to the contents that form the bulk of David Seebach’s book “So you want to be an Illusionist?” but Duane covers more illusions with a bit more detail and specifics. New illusionists will learn so much about standard illusions on the market in this section alone as Duane literally goes through a catalogue of illusions. And he has worked with a lot of illusions over the years. It looks like almost every illusion from an Owens and Abbott’s catalogue. It is very insightful and a fantastic reference for illusionists (new or seasoned) to see of a particular illusion is suitable for them. Illusions that he covers include:

  • Sword Basket
  • Kub Zag
  • Head Twister
  • Blammo
  • Zig Zag
  • Phantom Cage
  • Assistant’s Revenge
  • Body Slicer (Safety Slicer)
  • Upright Saturn Levitation
  • Mini Spiker
  • Through The Looking Glass
  • Origami
  • Fire Cage (Lion’s Bride)
  • Tipover Trunk
  • Modern Cabinet
  • Chests Of Mystery
  • Dekolta Chair
  • Table Of Death
  • Materializer
  • Elevator Illusion
  • Goddess Ascension and Water Levitation
  • Doll House
  • Sword Cabinet
  • Janet Illusion (Slicer)
  • Kiosk Illusion

One thing that I should highlight is that most of these are “stock” illusions and I always encourage illusionists to try and modify aspects of “standard” illusions’ design and presentational effect as they grow in the careers. My issue with too many “stock” illusions is that, while the illusions are solid time-tested effects, a lot of the exact illusions are also seen in similar large-scale illusions shows across the world. Just read any of Mike Weatherford’s reviews on magic shows in Vegas to understand what I mean. What I would suggest is to explore modifying not just aesthetic designs like the colours of the props/ costuming or even theming of the presentation but to actually use an illusion in a different way than intended or combining illusions to create different effects. Of course, this does not necessarily apply to someone new to illusions but it is something to always keep in mind.

Besides a large-scale show which is the focus of the book, Duane also explores a practical two-person illusion show that does not need to be performed with a crew or dancers. This will appeal to a lot of performers who do not have a permanent show but work one-off events like corporate shows, malls or festivals. He also discusses shows specifically for theme parks and Gospel magic shows.

If you are considering performing illusions or already do a small-scale illusion show but are thinking of creating a full illusion show, this book is a must-have investment! 5 out of 5 stars.

Review of Paul Harris Presents Haunted (DVD and Gimmick) by Peter Eggink

2 Apr

Reviewed by Adeline Ng

In my mind, one of the strongest effects for audience in magic belong inthe genre of ‘self animating object’.  Haunted deck and self-rising card effects are a few of the card effects that fall into this genre. I’ve been doing self rising card effects generally for walk around – main reason being that rising card effects do not have to be placed down on the table. Haunted deck however, is a stronger effect in my mind, as the deck animates itself to find the chosen card (as opposed to the chosen card animates itself).

Recently, since I have started performing at the bar, I’ve been looking at the haunted deck effect. Hence, when Haunted was out on the market, I did not hesitate in buying that. There are many versions of haunted decks in the market. What I was searching for was very specific. I liked the idea of a haunted deck but I wanted it to go one-step further. I wanted it isolated under the spectator’s hand. Haunted seem to be able to fulfil that.

Pros

Gimmick does fulfil the criteria that were stated on the DVD cover. It is easy to rope in and out, and I liked how thought has been put in for that. In terms of DVD production value, it was good and explanations by Peter Eggink were fairly clear. The necessary extra little thing was supplied for the effect as well, and it should last for a long time.

You are able to have the spectator cut the deck after replacing the chosen card into the deck if you like to do that.

I also like the final little shoot out of the chosen card and personally think it adds to the effect.

Cons

The moving of the deck was very tough to get consistently. Sometimes it moves faster, sometimes it does not. I have had occasions (during practise) that it doesn’t move at all – awkward if that happens in performance. I suspect, this might actually have something to do with the weather conditions here in Singapore, and might only be a problem here. Still I believe that a fair consistency can be achieved with practise.

Second thing, the movement of the deck is sometimes very little. Unlike the traditional haunted deck, it moves lesser in comparison. I’d love the deck to be able to move more but that is the limitation of the gimmick.

Others

I think this is quite a cool version of the Haunted Deck. I like how self-contained it is, and I personally would try to use it in my set.

Side-notes

Originally, I thought that this ‘mechanism’ (if I may call it as such) was a recent and new idea/invention. However, contrary to what I thought, the idea of creating the haunted deck effect using the similar necessary gimmicks had been out years ago. I recently bought another product which had a very similar idea and had been in production for a while (2009 or earlier). Either of the gimmicks will achieve very much the same effect.

Overall: 3.5/5 stars

Review of More Power to You: The Very Best of David Acer – Book

2 Apr

Reviewed by Bernard Sim

It’s a BOOK! I know many of you will shun away from books. Before you do that, please read this review. I hope this book will influence you to do more reading than watching DVDs.

David Acer has always been a very funny guy. He has written books and produced some DVDs. Some of the effects in this book can also be found in his DVD. But don’t take the easy way out and buy his DVD, there are some real gems in this book.

The book’s sleeve description starts with “More power to you gathers the finest efforts blah blah blah blah blah blah DaiVernon blah blah blah blah”… I’m not kidding about the blah blah blah, its really printed in the sleeves. While reading through this book, I was actually smiling and laughing loudly. This book is probably magic’s most enjoyable and funny read.

As for the effects, most of them are very commercial and I feel that the effects can even be marketed as individual effects. At a retail price of $40, you get a whopping 32 effects in one book. You can’t do some of the effects all the time, only when the opportunity arises. An example would be exchanging “air” in your lungs with the “air” in an inflated balloon. Visual and funny. Another one would be using a washing machine to find a selected card…. very interesting, novel and strong at the same time.

Other effects ranges from close up to stage. One of the stage effects is a transposition effect between two persons. The method is cheap and the effect is stunning. I can imagine that you can add in lots of comedy into this effect.

Close-up effects includes

coins across – very different from your standard coins across

ring flight – transposition between ring and key

production of a mobile phone from a folded envelope – this effects allows you to get hold of the spectator’s phone number. The spectator will also have your phone number. I can see a lot of opportunity here, be in business or pleasure.

Time flies – a time machine concept along the lines of Alan Shaxon’s “It’s a hold-up” and Rich Marrota’s “Mugged”.

There are many more with cards, ropes, spectacles and matchbook. If you have never own a magic book before, start with this one. If you have always like books, you shouldn’t miss this. If you are…… well you get the idea, just BUY THIS BOOK!

Highly recommended! Rating 4.5/5.

Review of Restored Credit (DVD and Gimmick) by David Regal – DVD

23 Mar

Reviewed by Bernard Sim

I first came across this effect when I was reading David Regal’s Approaching Magic. At that time I didn’t think of making up this set as I didn’t really visualize the effect. When I saw the demo of this effect  after it was being marketed as an individual effect, I was intrigued by the visual and somehow fun effect. I took out the book again and began making the gimmick. I have always kept my expired credit cards and I have no problem getting two of the same card to make the set.

As I use real credit cards to make this, it has its own advantage; the card looks real and authentic. The gimmick that comes with the package uses fake cards but the spectators probably wouldn’t be able to notice it as this is “quickie” effect. This effect is easy to do and is very good as an ice breaker. However, to perform this by itself would not look very good as the effect last less than 1 min. When you “tear” the card, it doesn’t look convincing as a torn card wouldn’t have such “cut” edges. This was also pointed out by my son the first time I did it for him. However, the restoring part is very visual and magical. By just waving the hand across the torn card, it magically restore by itself.

This is a fun thing to perform. At a retail price of US$30, which is almost half the price of his book (US$75), I’d rather get the book than this individual effect.

Review of Squeak Technique (DVD and Squeakers) by Jeff McBride

19 Jan

Reviewed by Bernard Sim

There aren’t a lot of materials on the Squeaker in the market. You can probably still find the book “The Art of Public Squeaking” from some old magic shops.  This DVD will cover what the book covers and more.

If you were to look at the video demo for this DVD, you’d probably not be impressed by it. When I first saw the demo, I was thinking “What was Jeff McBride thinking?” The demo does not do this DVD justice. The DVD is divided into two parts. The first part is on the on the Ball and Bowl routine, this includes very detailed histories, tips on props as well as the method employed with squeakers. You’d be surprised that squeakers actually made the routine more enjoyable and it also acts as a “convincer” when the ball vanishes or appears.

The second part is on adding sound effects to routines such as Dancing cane, Waltzing Matilda, thimbles, mime. I was not really impressed on the second part of the DVD. I agree that you can improve your routine with squeakers but I think it has to be used sparingly. Another point that I was not impressed is probably with Jeff McBride’s character, I like Jeff McBride and he is a very good magician, I just don’t see him doing funny acts.

I am a sucker, I mean fan of squeakers. I have various squeakers and plenty of Swiss Warblers. They are always fun to use, especially good for pranks :) . With this DVD, you will be able to add squeakers to your repertoire; squeakers will enhance your sponge ball routines. Recommended. Rating 4/5.

Review of OUT-STANDING by Roberto Mansilla

19 Jan

Reviewed by Bernard Sim

If you have been doing magic for a while, you should know about this effect “Out of this World” by Paul Curry. This is one of the best card routine ever devised. The original method is very easy to do and many magicians have versions of their own. Some versions are impromptu whilst others are gimmicked. Roberto Mansilla’s version is a little of both.

This is a stand up version of OOTW. The routine is easy to understand as well as perform. You will need to setup the deck in advance, an easy setup too. In this version, you don’t really have to do much, no counting, no memorizing, no difficult sleights. Mansilla employs some simple subtitles which makes the effect more convincing. You will just need to concentrate on the presentation. The good thing about this effect is that the spectators seem to be doing the magic rather than the magician.

The DVD has a very good layout. Production quality is also high. There is even a segment on the history of the original OOTW effect. If you are into parlor performances, this is a must have. This version can be performed close-up to a few or parlor and even in a stage setting. Highly recommended. Rating 4/5.

Review of Replay by Richard Hucko and The Blue Crown

19 Jan

Reviewed by Bernard Sim

“Changing one playing card into another is for sissies.”….. the first sentence on the product description of this item. So, have you been a sissy for a long time? If changing one card for another makes you a sissy, I don’t see how changing two cards at the same time makes you not a sissy.

Anyway, let’s skip the sissy part. This is yet another well produced DVD from The Blue Crown. I’m not talking about the content; I was referring to the overall production of the DVD. Content wise, it was ok. Color changing is always nice to look at, that is if it is done in moderation and part of a routine. I cringe whenever I see someone doing a color change as a “routine” by itself.

Some of the changes in this DVD are modifications from the standard color changes like the “Erdnase Color Change”. There are several versions taught for the Erdnase Double. The color change I like most is the Standard Double change. There is no visible hand motion when the card is being changed. It looks very visual and magical too. This version is not too difficult to do.

There are many changes taught and some of them can be quite tough too. If you like color changes, then this DVD is for you. It’s good to know many color changes but is it necessary? May be good if you intend to do a series of changes, but then again, it can be self satisfying to do all this but will your spectator like it? Hmmmm, points to ponder.

Rating 3.5/5.
